Creative process requires two types of thinking: Divergent thinking and Convergent thinking. Convergent thinking refers to a task oriented and focused thinking. This mainly happens when we are working, or doing a test. Divergent thinking, is a condition where the brain is relaxed, and many ideas are explored.
The concept of the design is to create a creative environment by establishing a balance between working and relaxing, for both convergent and divergent thinking to flourish.
The site is a library, located within Nanyang Academy of Fine Art’s sixth and seventh floor. Through survey, it is known that the library is where the students spend most of their time to work on assignments, as the environment is quiet and good resources are available. However, there is a lack of working space and privacy in the library, as it was designed to be a place to read, while the function itself has shifted into a place for discussion and work.
In an art and design school where creativity must thrive, a balance between working and relaxing should be created. Instead of a library that is only conducive for reading, it becomes more of a working space with a lot of educational resources, where students can choose what kind of an environment they want to work within. The design also aims to create relaxation space, where the users of the space could escape from the work that they are doing and just unwind.
DESIGN STRATEGY
Levelling
Relaxing means to escape the daily routine and do something without rules or restrictions. Spatially, it is translated into a space where people are free to choose however they want to use or explore the space. Therefore, levels are used to craft spaces, instead of partitions that limits the movement of users.

Voids
Creating a balance between working and relaxing also means to create a visual connection from work space to relaxation space. Therefore, voids are made to establish such connection.

Natural Elements
Being in nature improves productivity, as it helps people to relax and be more creative. The design aims to create an indoor environment that makes the users feel like they are out in the nature, through elements such as: natural lighting, greenery, and natural materials

Transition to a narrower space
Moving from a relaxing space into a working space is indicated by the change from a space where people are free to explore to a space that limits the movement of individuals.

Enclosure to create privacy
Solitude is the key to focus in working. To create this solitude, enclosed spaces are made to create privacy for the users of the workspace
